MARINA B. HODGE

(1802-1844)

Marina, also known as Martha, was the youngest daughter of Henry Hodge and his second wife Sarah (Cotton) Barnes. Martha was born March 27, 1802 in the Halifax District, Halifax County, North Carolina. She was but a young child when her father and mother migrated from Halifax County, North Carolina to Salem valley area of Livingston County, Kentucky in 1803/1804.  She was raised on her father’s farm at the foot of Kirk Bluff (Gobbler’s Knob) until December 1, 1818 when she married Presley C. Gray. Presley was the son of William Gray and Nancy Cotton. His father, of Virginia stock, had moved from Nelson County, Kentucky to the Salem area in 1814 where he bought 138 acres from Jonathan Ramsey. This land was next to the Henry Hodge and Dempsey Coffield farms located near Claylick Creek. In the Livingston County Tax Roll for 1819 Presley is listed with five white males over the year of 21 in his household. His possessions include one black male over 16, and two horses. In the tax roll for 1820 he is listed as the only male over 21. His possessions had not changed. Seven children were born to this union, but only six can be verified. They are Payton (Peyton) Randolph, Maria Jane, James H., John B., Barbara Ann and William Henry. After Martha’s death in 1844, Presley married Mrs. Sarah G. Boice (Boyce). Sarah had two children from her previous marriage to the Boice. Presley died in 1870 and was buried next to his first wife, Martha, at the Crewdon-Gray Cemetery near the Livingston-Crittenden County line.

Payton Randolph Gray, the oldest child of Martha and Presley, was born circa 1819 near Salem, Livingston County, Kentucky. His first marriage was to Mrs. Eliza (Dunn) Threlkeld in 1840. She died in 1841 leaving one child, which lived only nine months. In 1842 he married his second wife, Maria Ann Woods, daughter of David Woods and Sally Neal. Bondmen were D.C. Flournoy and his cousin Emilius P. Haynes. Richard Miles was listed as the guardian of Maria (also see marriage of James H. Gray and Maria L. Miles). They moved to Coahoma County, Mississippi in 1843 where she died the following year. Three children were born to this union, all deceased by the 1850 census. After the death of Maria he married Mrs. Margaret S. (Dickerson) Bohanan of Paris, Kentucky. She had one child named Ann from her previous marriage. Their first child Joseph was born while they lived in Coahoma County. Payton then moved his family to Searcy Township, Phillips County, Arkansas sometime after September 1850 where he bought a farm. In 1852 their second and last child Blanche was born. In 1863 he was drafted for Confederate service, but his son Joseph who was thirteen, went as a substitute. In 1870 Payton, Margaret and their son Joseph were living at Bear Creek Township. He was enumerated in the 1880 Hardy, Lee County census with his wife Margaret, his widowed daughter Blanche and her three children. Lee County was formed from Phillips County in 1872. His wife died in 1883 and he died prior to the 1900 census.

Payton’s son Joseph served in the First Arkansas Cavalry Regiment under Colonel Archibald S. Dobbins. In 1864 the First was consolidated with the Second Cavalry Regiment and Joseph served under Colonel Thomas J. Morgan until his discharge in January 1865. When he returned home from the war he worked on his father’s farm and did some clerking until 1872. He than went into the mercantile business at Philips Bayou and on April 28 1875 in Phillips County, he married Mary C. ‘Mollie” Wilkins. They had one son who died before his1891 biographical sketch in the “Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas”.

Payton’s daughter Blanche married John E. Burke on November 7, 1870 at Phillips County, Arkansas. He and Blanche had three children: Payton Randolph, Grace and Francis Noel. John was listed in 1880 census at Helena, Arkansas as single. Apparently he and Blanche had divorced prior to the 1880 census. In 1885 Blanche married William Thomas Derrick, who had migrated to Lee County from Alabama as a boy. William was Circuit Court Clerk for Lee County and was the widower of Mary S. Jones who had died the previous year. His biographic sketch is listed in the “Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas”.

Maria Jane Gray was born circa 1821 near Salem. Her first marriage was in 1837 to John Jordan Rochester, no known children were born to this union. Her second marriage was to Harrison B. McKinney in 1848. Harrison was a steamboat pilot and had three children from a previous marriage. They were enumerated in the 1850 census at Lafayette, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana with his children and their one child, Harrison. No further record.

James H. Gray was born September 27, 1823 on the Gray family farm east of Salem in present day Crittenden County, Kentucky. He married Maria Luisa Miles in 1852. She was the daughter of Richard Miles and Kittie (Neal) Woods. They owned a farm in the Dryer Hill precinct near Burna in 1870. Nine children were born to this union: Julia, William, Jessie, Ben, Charley, Cade, Lucian, John and Blanche. James and Maria are buried at the Miles Cemetery located off highway 723 (Pinckneyville Road) on the Maddux Farm in eastern Livingston County, Kentucky. His son Lucian apparently did a lot of traveling. He was in Colorado in 1900, Ballard County, Kentucky in 1910 and finally returning to Salem by 1920.

John B. Gray born circa 1827 in Livingston County, Kentucky. He was enumerated in the 1850 census in his father’s household in Crittenden County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth J. Monford on March 17, 1851 in Coles County, Illinois. She was born July 1830 in Indiana. John migrated to Coles Co., Illinois where he first three children were born, he than moved to Sugar Creek Township, Cass County, Missouri and finally to Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa. In the 1860 census he is living at Sugar Creek Township in Cass County, Missouri where he lists his occupation as a farmer. In the1870 census he was enumerated as John Grey and residing at Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa where he operated a livery stable. He later went into the hardware business with John Goode in Sidney. He was not the only Crittenden County native to move to Fremont County. Calvin M. Graves, son of William W. and Mahala Graves, was also a Crittenden County native. The Graves family moved to Fremont County in 1865. In the 1880 census at Sidney he was enumerated as John B. Gray and gave his occupation as a farmer. John and Elizabeth had the following children: Fanny, Zinzie, Barbara, Willy, Dora, Anna, Effie and John. His daughter Zinzie married Alphonso Penn. Alphonso was the son of Dr. John Penn. He took over the family business, Penn Drug Store, after his father’s death in 1896. Daughter Barbara Olive married Andrew B. Thornell who was a lawyer at Sidney. Their son Maj. John G. Thornell was the original commander of the dirigible “Roma”. He was killed when it crashed at Norfolk, Virginia in 1920. Maj. Thornell was flying as a passenger to his new assignment in Washington D.C. His remains were returned to Sidney and were laid to rest at the Sidney City Cemetery. Daughter Willy married James McDonald, a banker in Sidney. By 1910 they were living in Van Meter Township, Iowa where he was listed as a merchant. Daughter Anna married Sidney W. Richardson who was in the lumber business. They where enumerated in the 1900 census at Creston, Union County, Iowa with their son Joe. Daughter Effie married Judge Clarence J. Esden. In October 1887, Clarence bought his father-in-law’s interest in the hardware business, Gray and Goode, in Sidney. In 1911 he bought out the Goode family and the business became known as Esden Hardware Store. John B. Gray’s son, John M., married Gertrude Eskew. He owned a harness shop in Sidney.

Barbara Ann Gray, the youngest daughter of Marina and Presley was born on July 22, 1829 in Livingston Co., Kentucky. She first married Jesse Olive. In 1860 he was listed as a clerk and they lived in Salem next to the Pippin Hotel. Barbara and Jesse had the following known children: Willie, Belle, Lone, and Jesse. Her second husband was Madison F. Dunn. He owned a farm near Salem. Barbara and Madison were married on December 20, 1866 in Livingston County. This was an apparently short marriage because in 1868 Madison married a Susan E. Boyd. In 1870 she was living in Carrsville with her children Belle, Lone, Jesse and her brother William. In 1900 she was living with daughter Belle and her family in Carrsville. Barbara died the following year at Belle’s home and was laid to rest next to her first husband at Smithland Cemetery.

William Henry Gray was the youngest child of Mariah and Presley. He was born circa 1833 on the Gray farm near Salem. In 1850 he was living with his father and stepmother on the family farm in the newly created county of Crittenden. The farm was located about a mile east of Salem off present day U.S. Highway 60. In 1860 he was operating a grocery store in Salem and residing in William and Mary (Hodge) Pippin’s hotel. Mary Pippin was his mother’s sister and had married William Pippin after the death of her first husband John Lewis Berry. William married Mary Jane Crawford, at her mother’s home in Salem, on April 16, 1861. She was the daughter of Francis Crawford and Martha Champion. In 1870 William was living with his sister Barbara in Carrsville; his wife was not listed in the household. In 1880 Willam (Grey) was living on his farm near Carrsville with his wife and two daughters, Mary I. and Effal T.
