MRS. LUCY L. LOWE

Death in his inexorable tyranny has, during the last two or three months, laid claim to many of the oldest and most honored residents of Yolo county. The last of these was Mrs. Lucy L. Lowe, lamented wife of E.R. Lowe, who departed this life in San Francisco Sunday night, February 27th.  A brief announcement was made on Monday, but not enough of the particulars were known at the time to enable us to prepare a biographical sketch of the deceased. The body arrived in the city Tuesday evening, in charge of the family, and the funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10 A.M.

The deceased was a native of Kentucky and was born in Livingston county on the 23d of October, 1830. She therefore reached the rip old age of 67 years, 4 months and 4 days before being gathered home to her fathers. Her maiden name was Lucy L. Hodge. Her father was of English and her mother of Scotch descent, and she inherited from them longevity as well as a strong, true type of character, clearness of intellect, soundness of judgment and that kindliness and cheerfulness of nature which made a lasting impression upon those who at any time during her long and eventful career became associated with her.

While she was quite young her parents removed to Missouri. Of the family of children three are still living. One sister, Mrs. Julia Gallagher, lives in San Francisco. Another sister, Mrs. Corbry [sic], lives in St. Louis, Missouri, and a brother, Robert Hodge, is a resident of Brunswick, Missouri.

In St. Louis, Missouri, the deceased met E.R. Lowe and they were married on the 22d of December, 1847. They lived in that city for five years and Mrs. Lowe still owns the house in which they passed the earliest and some of the happiest days of their wedded life. Their many friends still have pleasant recollections of the appropriate and happy manner in which the fiftieth or golden anniversary was celebrated on the 22d of last December.

In 1852 Mr. and Mrs. Lowe crossed the plains, locating at first in Grass Valley. They afterwarde [sic] removed to Sutter county, living on a farm near Nicolaus. From thence they removed to Yolo county, making their home for a long time near Cacheville. In 1867 they completed what is now known as the Clark residence on Lincoln avenue, and moved to Woodland. In the ‘90s they built the lovely residence on the corner of First street and Lincoln avenue, and it has since been their home except at such times as they were traveling for health and recreation or in San Francisco for medical treatment.

To them have been born thirteen children. Only five survive the mother. Mrs. Harriet Brownell, T.R. and G.A. Lowe are residents of Woodland. Mrs. Anne McPhee and W.E. Lowe are residents of San Francisco. Her husband and all the surviving children were at the bedside of the wife and mother when her sweet spirit winged its flight to the land of the dead.

Mrs. Lowe’s first serious sickness came about seven years ago. After that time she was an invalid, but through all her affliction she was so patient, resigned and cheerful that those who enjoyed her confidence and close companionship felt that her influence for good was out of all proportion to what might be called her visible activity, and they feel that the influence of her patience, resignation and cheerfulness will go on forever.

Ten days before her death she was stricken with pneumonia. Although the first symptoms were alarming, she rallied and her family were for a time hopeful. But the ravages of the malady were too severe for a system already enfeebled, and on Saturday night she lapsed into unconsciousness and on 10 o’clock on Sunday night, without apparent pain or struggle, passed away as if in sleep.

Like many other early settlers of California, the deceased learned to labor and to wait in the school of necessity, and the habits thus formed became the stepping stones to the affluence that crowned her last years. Through the habit of toil she acquired the nobility of self-reliance, and prosperity never influenced her to abate her sympathy for early surroundings, early struggles and humble environments in which the strongest and best attributes of her character were developed.

If we may judge by the respect shown to her memory be old friends and neighbors, by the evidence of profound sorrow and sincere regret that are manifest on every hand, she was not a woman to know and be forgotten. She had attractive and twinning qualities that attached her friends with bonds not easily broken. She was a woman of strong common sense, forceful earnestness and fidelity of purpose, and yet she was modest, unostentatious, sincere, generous-hearted, simple in habits and tastes, plain and straightforward in speech and unpretentious in manner, and all of her sentiments, motives and sympathies were pare and lofty. Her virtues adorned her home with strict fidelity and disinterested devotion, and her heart was in close and sympathetic touch with the noble creed that teaches philanthropy without pretense and religion without cast. No greater tribute could be paid to her loyalty to friends, her faithfulness to obligations, her unselfish devotion to family and to home, her sweetness and gentleness of disposition, than that of the man who, knowing her from his boyhood as a devoted wife and affectionate mother, said while standing beside her coffin: “There lies one of the best women I have ever knew. She was a woman of generous impulses, lofty purposes and noble deeds, and out of her pure, kind heart there never preceded a sentiment unjust to any living being.”

Her work is done, and well done. Words of ours cannot convey to the bereaved a sense of their loss or lift the burden of anguish from their hearts, but it is a melancholy pleasure to us to be able to pay humble tribute to her memory.

MRS. JULIA GALLAGHER - Passed Away in San Francisco on Tuesday Night

Mrs. Julia Gallagher died in San Francisco Tuesday night, Marsh 28th. Services will be held in San Francisco. The body will arrive in Woodland on the noon train Thursday and will be taken direct to the city cemetery for interment.

Mrs. Gallagher has been an invalid for many years. A few days ago her condition suddenly became so much worse that her death was momentarily expected.  She rallied, but soon relapsed again and the end came as above stated.

Mrs. Gallagher was a native of Kentucky and about 62 years of age. Her parents moved to Missouri when she was quite young. Her maiden name was Julia Hodge and she was the youngest sister of the late Mrs. Lucy L. Lowe. The only survivor of the family of sisters is the eldest, Mrs. Marinda Corbry [sic], who lives in St. Louis. A brother, Robert Hodge, is a resident of Brunswick, Missouri.

Mrs. Gallagher came to California about the year 1862. She made her home in Cacheville for three years after which she removed to San Francisco, where she spent the remainder of her days.

The attachment between the deceased and her sister, Mrs. Lucy L. Lowe, was unusually strong, and after the death of the latter.  Mrs. Gallagher made a request that upon her own death she be buried in the same plot with Mrs. Lowe, T.R, and O. A. Lowe, nephews of the deceased, who are making arrangements for interment, will respect the wishes of their aunt.

All those who knew Mrs. Gallagher had a high respect for her and describe her as a woman of generous and noble impulses, a kindly and sympathetic heart and a warm and responsive nature.

MARRIED

HODGE – CUTTING

At the residence of the bride’s parents, in this city, on the 15th inst., by Rev. Joseph H. Scott, Mr. Berry Hodge, jr. to Miss Alice E. Cutting, both of this city.  We were among the number of those that witnessed the consummation of the final act, which binds together the hearts of two of our young and respected friends. We wish the bride and bridegroom as much happiness as they can enjoy, and many pleasant anniversaries of the day upon which each pledge the other love, honor and faithfulness.

-----------------

The nuptials of Berry Hodge, jr. and Miss Alice Cutting was largely attended by the citizens of Metropolis, Paducah, and Cairo. Ample preparations were made for the comfort of the guests. Transparencies gleamed from every window, and over the graveled walks; a table of a hundred feet in length filled an open space near the premises, and the delighted guests were not only regaled by all the delicacies of the season, but by the odor of a thousand flowers that bloomed in salent loveliness in the parterre*. To say that all enjoyed themselves would feebly express our sense of the happy occasion - - all were delighted, from the newly-married to the humble guest; a good nature, affability and welcome was pictured upon the features of the immediate relatives of the happy couple. The guest went home to the music of the Metropolis brass band, many of them thinking, no doubt, of that occasion when they, too, plighted their troth to loved ones, in the hallowed past.

Crittenden Record Press (Marion, Ky.) - Oct. (?), 1894

Mr. James T. Hodge died at his home in Marion Sunday, September 30, after a week’s illness of flux. He was buried at the Fowler cemetery* Monday afternoon Marion Lodge, Ancient Order of United Workmen, of which he was a member, had charge of the funeral ceremonies and buried him according to the beautiful ritualistic ceremonies of that order. James T. Hodge was a son of the late Elder Collin Hodge; he lived on a farm near Marion several years and a few years ago sold his farm and moved to town, where he has since resided. He was a peaceful, unapretentious citizen, and his death is deeply lamented. His wife, who was the daughter of the late James Fowler, survives him, as does one daughter, Miss Annie, the only living child.

HISTORICAL SITES

hodge_taylor_home

The Hodge-Taylor House is one of the oldest dwellings in Marion County, Texas. At the time of its construction c. 1852 and in subsequent deed records it was referred to as the Berry Hodge Homestead so named after its original owner, Berry Hodge, a prominent landowner, farmer and surveyor. Berry was a former deputy under Sheriff James Ford, leader of the notorious "Fords Ferry Gang". He was incorrectly listed in the book "Satan's Ferryman's A True Tale of the Old Frontier" as Benny Hodge. One wonders where he got the money to build this mansion in Texas.

Last Wills and Testaments

BLOUNT HODGE

Livingston County Will Book C, page 19

In the name of God, Amen.

I Blount Hodge of Smithland, Livingston County Kentucky being of sound mind and disposing memory, through 70 years of age the 28, day of last May & cannot live long at best, & further feeling it to be very bound in duty as our honest & honorable men in the sight of God, do make and declare this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking and destroying all former Wills heretofore made by me.

First, I will and devise to Ellen Farmer mother of Charley Hodge Dec’d   Thirty-nine acres of land lying and being in Pope County Illinois, valued at $300, the same land on which she now lives and for a more particular description of said land

See deed of same  from    Charley n Hodge   to me  recorded  In Pope County Clerks Office.

Secondly: I will and devise to my son Gus Hodge of New Orleans. One undivided half part of the Marion Robertson farm in Marshall County Ky. Deeded to me by said Robertson & wife. Containing 186 ½ acres, the whole tract valued at $3000.

Thirdly: I devise to my son J.C. Hodge five dollars, heretofore having given to him absolutely about four thousand dollars in Notes and real estate-see Judge Bennett and A. Birdwell. Now the above devise is all of my estate real or person he ever shall inherit except a full plain and rad_cal change in all his habits associations & dealings in every respect and I here acknowledge that I have no hope that there will any change for the better, but shall look for the worst and I have this day rec’d information that He is now fixing up claus to thward and destroy this will & I do hope to God the County Court of Livingston County will scout all such subterfuges if any should be attempted.

Fourthly: I will and devise to Almina Wynder the house and lot whereon I am now living including all the household & Kitchen furniture, also the red frame house lott on which it stands on the corner of  Mill-Charlotte streets fronting 50 feet on Mill and running back one hundred feet to the Church lott, then to Charlotte- also the double frame house where Henry Green & Andy Miles lives and the entire lott, under fence where it stands on Adair Street. These Several devises to Almina Wynder in the aggregate amounts to $5360-

Fifthly: I will and devise to Lucy Wynder a colored girl that lives with me and is a daughter of Alivina Wynder the frame Levrney house & lott, 45 feet to on Charlott Street running with Thos. Bates live 200 feet towards the river valued at $300 also a lott on Main Street  apposite J.W. Richardson residence sold to me by Mrs E. Leoury valued at $50., also 63 acres of land joining the land sold to Doctor Jones being to reiunant of the Joseph T. Allyn land this I value at $3.00 per acre. My executors hereafter named will sell all this devise the first good chance and appropriate the money in Schooling Lucy, which will be the best.

Sixthly: I will and bequeath to Almina Hodge jr. and Lillian St. Clair Hodge both of which are my children and daughters of Almina Wynder to belong to their jointly my Cooper farm on Tennessee River containing 7 or 8 hundred acres & perhaps more if it is fun properly in this County which I value at 8 or 10 thousand dollars but it is my wish that my executors R.S. Boyd & A. Birdwell sell the Cooper place for the best price as soon as deem necessary to a bluin as much as possible and men invest the preceeds of same in good and secure Bonds, and collect the interest and apply to the education of said children, also I will and devise to Almina Hodge the Stable lot 100 by 200 feet on the corner of level & Charlott Street valued at $100- also I devise the proceeds of the 177 acres of land bought of John Davis and sold to Wm. Vance & McClure. I devise she sell have the proceeds of said sale when collected valued at $1200.

Eightly: I devise that my personal property not devised in this will be sold and all cash notes collected and the land notes collected, and if any of the land sold should have to be bought or fall back to my estate I devise the same to be resold by my Executors to the best advantage they having full power to make Deeds to. Also I will and devise that all the money collected on notes or land notes or for land resold if any,  and after pay- my just debts and expenses in carry-  this willfully out, to be equally divided 1/3 each to Almina Wynder, Almina Hodge jr & Lillian St. Clair Hodge.

Lastly: I hereby empower and authorize my Executors R.S. Boyd & A. Birdwell to sell & convey & confirm a sale to any or all said property devised to Almina Wynder & her 3 daughters whenever it becomes necessary, as she may have to leave here, & pay the proceeds of said sales whenever in the Judgement of my said Executors it is for the best or should be deemed necessary, and should such a course be deem & necessary & my Executors think it best, then in that case they will pay Almina Wynder her part to do with as she please, but be sure & keep the children vested in good securities & to used for the schooling & support.

Finally: I hereby appoint my special friends R.S. Boyd & A. Birdwell my Executors to carry this my last will and testament into effect, and request the County Court of Livingston County to not require security of them, but permit them to qualify upon their own personal bond & I wish my executors to be paid two hundred dollars each when all the services are performed-which can soon be done.

In addition to the above I have this day to say that there has been an attempt to take my life with Strychnine & I now think I know the parties that were engaged in it & I think they will produce a fraudulent Will or try every device to destroy this.  I make this will in Justice to my words and conscience before God & man.

Signed and acknowledge by Blount Hodge as

Oct. (?), 1894

Mr. James T. Hodge died at his home in Marion Sunday, September 30, after a week’s illness of flux. He was buried at the Fowler cemetery (Pilot’s Knob) Monday afternoon Marion Lodge, Ancient Order of United Workmen, of which he was a member, had charge of the funeral ceremonies and buried him according to the beautiful ritualistic ceremonies of that order.

James T. Hodge was a son of the late Elder Collin Hodge; he lived on a farm near Marion several years and a few years ago sold his farm and moved to town, where he has since resided. He was a peaceful, unapretentious citizen, and his death is deeply lamented.
